My kids’ interest in classic rock has been fueled in large part by playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero with their friends.  Even the first-grader gets into the act.  He likes to do his “Phil Collins” impression:  lead singer and drums at the same time.  Naturally, the older kids are mortified by his antics, but that does nothing to stop him.  phil-collins

Recently my teenage son went to a flea market with some friends and discovered a booth that sells nothing but vinyl records.  He was impressed at how much better the cover art looks in the larger format and, judging a book by its cover, picked up a Boston album because he admired the UFOs that were really electric guitars.

He mentioned over the weekend that he wished he could play the album, so I rummaged around in the basement and found our dusty old turntable.  Then I had to take the stereo apart so I could plug the speakers into the turntable.

Boston sounded great as always and my son and his friends enjoyed listening to it.  Not about to let an opportunity go by, I pulled out the box of LPs that my husband and I collected in our high-school and college days.  There was everything from Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young) and Simon & Garfunkel to Dan Fogelberg to Duran Duran to Billy Joel and more.

When my daughter walked into the room, she stared at the record spinning on the turntable.  “What the heck is that?”  she wanted to know.  In thirteen years, she has never seen one of these.

It might be a while before anyone around here listens to a CD again.  It’s too fun playing the old LPs with the hisses and pops!
